A Wife’s Understanding of Sin

A wife’s understanding of sin should be just like everyone else’s. See, this is the part of the book that I disagree with. While the author uses the word “sin” consistently, she fails to define it. She talks about the characteristics of sin (and she’s right!) but she doesn’t define her terms. And that’s my problem with most of the church. They don’t define sin. You see, sin cannot be our own moral compass. It cannot be our own definition. It cannot be something we think is “bad”. Lucky for us most of our country’s laws resemble biblical law, so we were raised not to steal, murder, etc. However, what does our bible define sin as?

Sin is transgression of the law. (1 John 3:4) And I want to let everyone know I reject dispensationalism. I believe the entire bible is true for today and that we are not under some new theology. We are grafted in says Romans chapter 11! We are the commonwealth of Israel says Ephesians 2! We are to follow Yeshua (Jesus) and He said

For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. (Matthew 5:18 KJV)

So, there you have it. I’m a Torah observant believer in Messiah and sin is the transgression of that Torah (law). I belong to the Kingdom of G-d and He has rules for that Kingdom. I’m thankful that I am saved by grace through faith to good works by the saving blood of the Messiah (Jesus) who was sacrificed for me. I follow G-d’s royal law as described by James

So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty. (James 2:12 KJV)

Sin is bondage. That is what Messiah calls it in John chapter 8

Jesus replied, Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.e 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.f 36 So if the Son sets you free,g you will be free indeed.

G-d’s law, his Torah (which really means guidelines or instructions), is the law of liberty and it’s within these guidelines that I am truly free!!

As a wife, a mother, a woman, a person, an adult, a being created by a most perfect Creator my understanding of sin is that it’s the transgression of His law. And you will only know what that law is if you read Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. You can follow along each week as we read the Torah portions. After a year you will have completed the entire Torah! Remember, you can’t understand the last half of the bible without a complete understanding of the first half.

This is how we’ll define sin from this point forward in reading The Excellent Wife. Aside from lack of definition, the entire chapter was spot on! No one is exempt from sin, sin cannot be hidden from G-d, and sin is justly penalized. Praise G-d for our Savior!! Praise G-d for His atoning sacrifice made to cover my transgressions! Remember: cast off the old man, and put on the new. It’s a process of change. You won’t master it over night. But now that we have a clear definition of sin let’s move forward into the next chapter and I’ll see you next week!

Many blessings to you!
