I read an article recently that told me “self care”, as a wife and mother, wasn’t biblical and was the epitome of selfish. The author went on to (mis)quote Paul in regards to being selfless, sacrificing of ourselves and our time, and essentially sacrificing every ounce of our being. Sure. Sounds great. And when I do that and have nothing left to give I’ll be a GREAT wife and mother afterwards. NOT.

UGH. Can you tell I’m a **little bit** frustrated after reading that post?? While it’s not completely wrong (we SHOULD give sacrificially!!), it’s not right, either. I mean, I’m essentially on call 24/7, I don’t get vacation, sick time, PTO or any other time off. I’m not paid in the conventional way, i.e. a paycheck. And it’s worth it. It’s SO worth it. I love every minute of it even when I get frustrated, tired, and discouraged. Because I know that this is my calling. Mamas, you know exactly what I’m talking about! BUT, yes, but, I need to invest in me. The way I pour into my marriage, my family, and my faith, I need to pour into me. At least a little bit. When I can. Where I can. And how I can. Because ladies, we simply cannot pour from an empty vessel. So this year, 2018, I am dedicating it to self care. I’m focusing heavily on my health: mind | body | soul.

I’ve come up with a few things that I’m starting off with in 2018. Here it is:

Music. Yes, MUSIC. Amazon Music is my favorite because it’s inexpensive, I can download songs and albums to my devices and create playlists. It gives me stations based on my music selections, and there are zero commercials. You can get yours here:

I’m also going to be journaling more this year. It’s cheaper than therapy (j/k) and it helps me sleep better at night because I can dump out my brain onto paper and organize it when I get the time. Or not. Sometimes I crumple it up and throw it away. Because that helps, too. Get a super cute journal on Amazon. Studio Oh is one of my favorite brands because the paper can hold some serious ink. Great if you like to write with fountain pens!

Ladies, our bodies are temples. And it’s up to us to take care of them. I’m tired of using my family as an excuse as to why I can’t find time to “workout”. Les Mills is my FAVORITE exercise program on the planet. I was a RPM and Body Pump instructor for several years and it was amazing. Great music, great results, and it’s FUN. I will forever be a Les Mills advocate! What’s even better is that they now offer an On Demand subscription service. You can access it on your phone, computer, or Xbox One. You can also download the workouts to access offline. Seriously, give it a try. You won’t be sorry! Sign up for your free 10 day trial here:

Something else I’m taking seriously this year is my skin. I don’t wear foundations or base, so my complexion is very important! (It’s important even if you do wear those things, btw.) Something I’m loving right now is Drunk Elephant skin care. I’m also making my own serums, but that’s a whole different post! Start your 2018 off on the right foot and try this small set (found on Amazon) and see if you don’t look like a million bucks!

Last, but most definitely not least, is our soul. Our prayer life. Our relationship with our Creator. Where are YOU at in your walk? Sometimes I’m straight as an arrow and sometimes I’m walking more of a squiggly-squig. This year I’m going to be more intentional with my faith. And that starts in the Word. My favorite translation (apart from the KJV) is the TLV aka Tree of Life Version. It just resonates within me and I’ve grown to love it. You can get yours on Amazon for about twenty bucks. It’s a beautiful bible, too!

And Psalms. Man, o man. Psalms are something I love to read throughout the day. They lift me up and make my heart happy no matter how my day has been going. My favorite book of Psalms is the pocket Tehillim. It’s got the reading plan, too, so you can essentially read the entire book of Psalms about 4 times each month. Great for the ambitious!

I hope y’all are ready for a rockin’ new year! It’s my prayer that yours is filled with peace and blessings and an intimate relationship with the Creator. Take care of yourself, your marriage, and your family. Do good, be good, and look good and take nothing for granted.
